Patio Essentials

Updated: Feb 27, 2024

During the summer months, I spend most of my time outdoors. In Idaho, the weather can rage from comfortably warm to dangerously scorching. However it is typically somewhere in the middle, a pleasant, bearable heat. I should note that I am acclimated to the conditions here, since I’m a gem state native. At our house, we consider May through September to be prime patio dwelling season. When the kids are out of school in the summer, we always make it a point to take advantage of the ample space we have in our yard. It is essential that we arrange all the must haves, so that we are able to enjoy them. I am always on the lookout for perennial plants and decor features that speak to me. It is important that our patio is functional and pleasing to the eye. At the beginning of the vacation season, I added a couple of outdoor items and furniture pieces, that amplify the vibe I’m going for. To start, the greenery and pottery on the front steps always makes a first impression. My current design inspiration emanates from the timeless look of European cottage gardens. Grecian busts, cement urns, and terracotta pots add earthy elements and elegance to a patio scape, a look that will never go out of style. Dwarf orange trees, jasmine, boxwood bushes, ornamental grasses, and climbing vine flowers are plants that can withstand the heat, while still looking attractive. In addition to the earthenware, I settled on a spacious, outdoor sectional with character.

Our outdoor couch is covered by shade sails that save us from the sun. Shade sails are the perfect inexpensive accent to any patio. Especially one that is exposed to excessive heat. Equally important are the LED string lights! Roger always install three sets of lights over our patio area. They are sturdy and long lasting, and most importantly, they keep the garden courtyard bright at night. The entire patio arrangement undoubtedly allows the entire family to relish in our summer surroundings.
