For myself and a vast majority of the population, 2023 was the year of DIY projects. With platforms like TikTok and Instagram offering up the latest trends and viral finds, it’s likely that most people are familiar with ikea hack furniture options. Not surprisingly, creative and logical minds alike seem to love the idea of functional, affordable, & customizable home fittings. These are all key aspects that DIY furniture brings to the table.
In my own home, Roger and I have started and completed a long list of DIY projects over the last four seasons. Both indoor and outdoor ventures have been planned, taken on, and checked off the list. Large scale endeavors like painting the house exterior, adding rock veneer, and refinishing our hardwood floors certainly made me happy, and helped to revamp our home base in a huge way. Even so, these jobs did not bring about strong feelings of elation, quite like the DIY project that is currently underway in our living room. It is important to note, I had been waiting for the day, for years, that Roger would finally agree to start on my build-in bookshelves. In true Pinterest mom fashion, leading up to this highly anticipated day, I had pinned countless inspiration photos and read blog after blog that made it a point to detail the building process. When it came time to design and erect my own DIY build-ins, I was more than ready.
We are at a point in the coveted project where all the major pieces have come together. The next step we need to take is to add the finishing touches like trim, paint, and fixtures. Excited is an understatement! I can’t wait to see this project finished! Looking forward to the day that it’s done, I have started to plan out and purchase my shelf decor items. One of the best and most obvious things about this DIY project, besides the fact that it adds value to our home, is that I will have more storage room and shelf space to utilize. Since I have lived in a smaller house for the past ten years, I have had to be very picky about what I chose to display. Being that there isn’t much space in my home, for knickknacks and art, I have had to avoid buying things of this nature. Even when these items really speak to me.
Now that our build-in is close to being done, I am ready to start acquiring the shelf decor items of my dreams! Many of these items are pieces I’ve had my eyes on for years. Remember, it’s important to pick artifacts and curios for your home that make you happy! Although following trends can sometimes be a fun experiment that keeps one open minded and somewhat relevant, I recommend staying true to yourself. The shelf items I am going to share with you today are all things that I would call dopamine decor. The cool thing about dopamine decor is that it doesn’t fit in a box, because different things light different people up inside. But who knows, perhaps you and I like some of the same things.
